Stationed within the ballroom was the same little figure, a dark-haired girl with a lace headband and a long, white-and-blue smock dress. Blue outlined her body, and pixels occasionally appeared to tremor and glitch, exposing her for what she really was.
As the ballroom began to fill with the likes of all twenty-three students, Ai began her briefing.
"Good morning, all! You have heard what I stated as today's topic? All of you seem to have a good handle on interaction already- the first and second floor have been filled with chatter all day. It warms our hearts here at Hope's Peak Academy to see you all getting along rather well!"
Her eyes drifted to the likes of Haruka and Daniel.
"W-well... for the most part, at the very least. All of you have introduced yourselves, and most of you have gotten the hang of small talk! So, now that we're all down-to-earth and ready to begin, I wanted to begin with the sub-topic of--"
And... all of a sudden, the electricity flickered before turning off completely. Sparks could be seen coming from Ai's projector as her hologram dissipated, and the lights from the chandelier went dark, despite it being broad daylight outside.
Bustle and complaints could be heard from adjacent rooms.
"Th-the power's on the fritz?! Engineers, go check the basement generator!"
"Who killed the lights? Ai was just about to do her briefing, this is the worst time for this!"
"Call in the guys upstairs, the construction on the atrium can wait!"
"W-what about the girl?! With the power off, is she going to be--"
And then, it all went black. Quite literally, indeed. A dark shade came over the windows, plunging the entire room into darkness. Voices and sound turned to white noise as vision faded... and not a one person in the entire building was awake, for that moment.
---
When everyone's consciousness returned seconds later... it was as if everyone had fainted, if just for a few seconds. People had fell to the ground where they stood, leaving a few with bruises from the hardwood floor.
"Sleeping in class on your very first day, huh? You're certainly not beginning on a high note, if you ask me."
A voice was heard loud and clear across the ballroom... and it was disturbing. A voice that sounded like a falsetto, like a young child's or perhaps an old woman's, resonated from below. It was like an old-fashioned cartoon character- a fake voice, one that someone would imitate. And yet... it had this awful, sardonic ring to it. As if this ridiculous voice meant business, in some way or another.
"Come on, you lazy bastards, pick yourselves up! We've yet to begin our briefing- if you listen well and stay quiet, maybe I'll be open to considering this a good start. We have a lot to get through! I need to brief you on this place's rules, so listen well and shut your faces for just a short time. It'll be a brief briefing, I swear- I speak quickly."

Morning briefing. This was it, the time had come to start these talks and these long winded speeches, it was time to... No, not save the world. Better it. Somehow his thoughts always zeroed in on the idea that he would 'save' the world. Why why why, was he getting too selfish from his previous 'adventures' and such? He had to be. He should drop out on being the main king and character in the future. He would be the last high king of their little game, and he'd let the stalwarts unite under his banner to decide on a new leader. He'd leave it all behind leading wise, except for the management side of things.
His ears perked as Ai spoke. Some had not been getting along? His eyes turned to where the A.I's gaze had been, landing over to Daniel and Haruka. Had those two not started off well? Considering one was a procrastinator and the other a student council president (or so he remembered), he could understand any potential animosities between the two parties. Oh well, they could bicker on if they wished, as long as they could reasonably work together without causing too much of a mess.
And a mess was forming without their help already. He visibly flinched and even silently yelped as Ai and the lights disappeared, a darker shade taking over the whole hall. His eyes quickly darted around, hearing noises of complaining from the other students and from the arrangers of this event. A little mess up, nothing more, nothing less. People were being called, and he was sure that things would be fine soon. They would be, right? They surely will.
It was then that Ishin fell on his knee, muttering a word and then fell down with a thunk, as did everyone else. Darkness fell.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
His eyes practically ripped open as he begun to search for air in his lungs. He had none, but air quickly rushed inside. It was as if he had been dead for a few seconds. Had he panicked so much that he had collapsed? The thought embarrassed him enough to cause him to quickly jolt upwards, dusting himself up and avoiding looking at the others. He knew they too had fallen, yet he wanted to try and act like he had not. He had too much pride, he felt. He should avoid that.
His ears still rung a bit for some reason as the cartoonish, even annoying voice ran down his ears and spine, causing a fearful shiver that almost made him want to puke. "Sleeping? Verily, show yourself! Put the light's back on! Is this some sort of prank by Ai and the other arrangers? If so, I present you my most sarcastic laugh as to show my appreciation! HA. HA. HAA. Now, end this charade!"

Rin stood stalwart at attention for Ai, his ears perked and ready to hear about all there was to do. To be honest, his conversations had tired him out a bit, and all but the one he had shared with Ishin had started up on something of a bad note. He would have to try and reestablish himself as a gentleman, to demonstrate that he could handle these peace talks... and to show that he was just as much a leader as any of the other Ultimates when he was holding the reins. Yet, just as he was about to hear what would be necessary for all of these things to occur...
The power went out, leaving Ai's hologram to rot and the whole room dark. He immediately crossed his arms anxiously, looking to the Foyer to see if the people there had been affected, too- and indeed they were, with engineers and teachers and hosts scooting about to fix the problem downstairs. But at the very least, this was all just arbitrary time-wasting, and in a few minutes things would be resolved and everything would be back... on.... t-track...?
He held his head in his hands for just a moment, feeling something come over him.
---
beat
"... Ngh... I am... I am... w-where am I?" he asked as his eyes opened a crack. He shot up to his feet after a moment of silence, feeling that his back had been injured. And he was greeted by a... very strange, very unfamiliar voice. It came back to him- peace talks, Hope's Peak... but who on Earth was this?
"I-if this is some kind of a prank, please stop." Rin said, challenging the voice while sounding somewhat unsure himself. And then, the voice dared to curse them out. Was this really Hope's Peak Staff? No, impossible, they'd never use such language.
"Show yourself! I know you're not affiliated with anyone else here, so give it up!" he stated defiantly, once again giving a challenge. "Tell us what's happened!"

A meeting about...the teenage psyche? Paris smiled as she thought of Hitoshi. This would be right up his alley, wouldn't it? In his element. She still held her books tightly as she made her way to the ballroom, hoping it wouldn't get her into trouble. No use upsetting any of the officials during the first meeting...She slipped in behind Ishin as he entered, offering him a grateful smile as she readjusted her three prizes. To her relief, the room was nearly empty, save for the LARPer and the dreadful Ai.
Soon enough, the room filled up with a clamor of students, all having made friends by now. Ai went on and on, speaking about watching us make friends and about others not getting along. Of course the Procrastinator and the Student Council President didn't get along, they were foils to one another. Typical.
Paris' eyes widened as the lights went out, and Ai with them. While she didn't care for the AI, she felt an odd twinge of worry for its well-being. That was quickly replaced by blind panic as the voices began, each calling for different measures to be taken. What kind of retreat was this? The mansion seemed dusty, but did they really just begin using it today? Was this a death trap waiting to happen?! Paris sank to her knees, but not out of fear. She watched in horror as her books clattered to the ground, her arms now limp at her sides. Before she could call out, all she felt was a slight breeze before everything went dark.
As she awoke, the voice made her regret it. Cold, metallic, but...familiar. Like that of an old person. Sitting up shakily, she looked around and saw not all the students had gotten up yet. Her head was throbbing, and upon touching it found it was sore. When did she...? She looked instinctively to the people she knew. Ishin. Rin. Mai, Angie, David, Hitoshi, Leo, Lucca...her mind swam and she realized she was tilting sideways. Shaking her head, the librarian shifted, sitting on her legs.
“Who is this?! Ohh, it's never just darkness, never just words, never, never...” she muttered, gripping her hair as her headache intensified. A moment of sudden clarity. “This...this isn't right at all. Where...a-are we?”

It was Paris' response that the voice addressed first.
"The Half-Moon Mansion, where else would you be? You're the people who signed up for this retreat. What's all of this sudden hoopla? The lights shut off for a few seconds, your otaku-pandering tour girl gets left on standby like Windows '98 and you all get your panties in a twist over that? As for what's going on..."
Two slats of tiles began to rise from the ground until they were separated from the rest of the floor, unlocking sideways and unveiling a hardwood podium rising up from below on a pair of spinning gears.
"I'm Monokuma, your actual host on this lovely little mansion retreat!" the voice stated, full of somewhat acidic glee. What appeared to be a stuffed bear (of all things) jumped on top like a remote control toy, but its face looked... messed up. One half was snowy white and looked like a children's toy, while the other was black and had a red, slashed eye and an impish smile that stretched across the left side of its face.
"... No refunds, by the way. I should establish that before any more of you people opt out. Cowards, the lot of you, I swear- ten minutes away from home and you end up in tears- teens, kids, adults, it doesn't really matter the age, the waterworks start so soon. It gets me upset after a while, you know? Plain sadness is just so boring."
He turned to the people who had spoken up- Rin, Ishin and Paris.
"Butler? LARPer? Librarian? And people called last year's talents weird... you people are a joke. But, don't worry, I have my ways of making even people with dull and useless talents interesting- and it all begins with our rulebook. Ooh, is everyone ready to hear? First off, the trip's been extended 'til... well, approximately the rest of a human lifespan... just to make it extra safe, one-hundred years. You're all going to stay here forever in this wonderful place with me!"

"W-what in the world...?"
A bear? What on earth was that stuffed monstrosity? Probably some kind of remote-control toy, it seemed to move without any strings or wires attached... but what was this bilge that it was spouting?
Upon hearing the bear's plans for the group, her expression switched to slightly hysterical denial.
"Ehehe... v-very funny! We know that this is all some emergency-based prank... you staff people, you kidders! You can... you can seriously stop, now. This is starting to frighten me..." she said, as her face began to twist into a scared grimace.
She nudged closer to Jun and Sakura, quite afraid.
"It's just a plush toy, right? It's nothing to be scared of... it's all just some entrance ceremony ridiculousness, I'm sure of it! I've spoken to other Hope's Peak kids, and they say that initiation is rough... could this be what they were speaking of?" she asked. Yet, it was exceedingly apparent that she was trying to reassure herself and keep herself sane more than anything.
She clutched her cell phone in her right palm, immediately dialing her parents' home number... only to get...
NO SIGNAL.
"Zero bars? Th-the signal was here a moment ago. The lights are on, why can't I call anybody?!"

Leo was standing towards the back of everyone, having a terrible time with the whole crowd situation. He preferred to stay out of the thick of it. He was still looking at the AI trying to figure out the programming and laughing internally when Nolen wondered if the programmer even thought about a firewall. It was times like that he and Nolen actually got along.
However, then the lights went out. Leo looked around confused and his heart began to race. "What's going on?" Leo muttered to himself. Hey, stop it. No big deal. We could do this really easily. Yes, but it wasn't their fault. Everyone seemed to be freaking out, well, most people, and then everything went even darker, and his consciousness faded.
When he awoke once more and the bear introduced himself, Leo frowned. I really wish it were the AI. This trip would've been a lot more fun. A bear. He couldn't take control of a bear. Unless it was a machine. Now THAT would be interesting. Oh yes.
But a lifetime? "You have got to be kidding me. The Italian government won't stand for it." It was the first time in a long time Leo had ever spoken up in a crowd, mostly because he wanted, so badly, to go back home and be useful for the country he loved. And he was pretty darn sure they would not appreciate their star hacker, who still had secrets from them to use later in case he hit a dry spell, staying in this mansion for the rest of his life.

Post by Junichi "iTchY" Kichise on Jul 27, 2015 21:53:05 GMT
Unlike those before him, Junichi didn’t experience a wave of anything before he fainted: he was just upright, and then he was not. '...''Hm?'He experienced dizzy spells very rarely and had passed out once before when he got sunstroke on vacation, but this felt... different somehow. Lying with his cheek pressed onto the monochrome tiles, he remained sideways as he stirred, trying to recall what had happened. Dad. Sakura and Minako. Daniel. Victor and Amelia. Ai. A power cut? Jun didn't like the how wide and empty the ballroom was, but he liked the darkness -- he was soothed by how it filled the space, and with someone’s something resting on his ankle, he knew he wasn't alone. The floor was surprisingly warm under his face, like he’d been there long enough to transfer his body heat, but the utaite jolted up when he shifted and felt the cold shock of a different plate. Blood rushing, the boy groaned and grabbed his skull, barely able to understand that the contrast was because the second area hadn't been in contact with anything capable of emitting positive temperatures. Since he was now sat up he could finally feel a dull ache around where his elbow had been pinned down, and when his body settled its life liquid, he didn't understand why his class was so panicked. “Hey now, everyone calm down!” His disorientated awakening had clearly made him miss the "lazy bastards" comment, but he caught the tail end of something about a briefing. The voice was not Ai's, but it still sounded artificial so it was likely another hologram running on in the blackout. This idea was shortly disproved by the appearance of a two-tone mascot. Junichi noticed Minako crawling towards him and Sakura, but he'd never seen the Painter this hysterical before -- it was like all of her level-headed attitude had been forced upside down to make room for an anxious mess. "Micchan, we're in a castle; that type of signal is probably normal," he assured her "This is just some prank, right Sakura-senpai? The Ultimate Robotics Engineer is just trying their hand at beating Zulfikar at being the SHSL Comedian or something to that affect." He didn't understand why everyone was so out of it. (He didn't take the time to think about their periods of unconsciousness.)The brunet looked up at Monokuma. "Excuse me, sir or ma'am, but what is this rulebook you speak of?"

Daniel was pretty surprised when he heard that he had to come to the ballroom after leaving Amelia in the library.
"I wonder what they want?", he pondered. With slow steps, he reached his destination. Ai had something to announce, but before she did so, she glanced over the Procrastinator and that Haruka. It was true that they didn't get along, but not everyone could be buddy-buddy with one another.
At that point, Ai disappeared. "Huh? What just happened? Where's Ai? Did the machines malfunction?", he wondered. The artifical intelligence seemed perfect not even two to three hours ago!
Suddenly, Daniel began to feel weak in his knees.
"What... is happening... to me...?"
With a thud, he fell to the ground. When he regained consciousness, a strange panda-like creature with a menacing red eye stood before him. He seemed to be fully awake when the creature referred to itself as 'Monokuma'. Daniel really didn't like the fact that he was supposed to be here for the rest of his life.
"What do you mean, a hundred years? Are we trapped here?" He then spoke with a voice that sounded defeated. "Please don't say we're trapped here..."
He then looked at Junichi, the first friend he made over the course of the last few hours.

"You can't call anyone because I took out the phone signal! There's no internet, no cell phone service, and basically no connection to the outside, just as it was in the days when this mansion was first constructed. It'll be like we're living through history. You don't have to worry, though- nobody's coming for you and it's not as if you're able to leave just by opening a door or a window. Doors leading outside are locked and reinforced, and the windows are reinforced and made of thick polymethyl methacrylate... also known as Plexiglass for those of you not majoring in chemistry." he stated, tacking the last bit on for show.
"You and your whining about living here forever. Don't think I'll be letting you starve or anything- this place's budget? Enormous. More money goes into this place per day than most breadwinners will earn their whole entire lives- kind of a sad sentiment, if we're being honest. So, be free as you can! This place is huge, it's like a miniature city- you'll never be bored again. It'll be all twenty-three of you living in relative harmony, caged within these walls! Things come in here, but they never really go out, you know?"
"Now, then... where was I? Oh, right, the rulebook..."
The bear reached behind the podium, pulling out a heavy tome and turning to the spine.
"Hmm... your lives will consist of an orderly, school-like schedule. "Morning" begins at six AM and "night" at ten PM. You're required to be in your rooms from night until morning- no ifs, ands or buts. Harsh punishment will ensue for anyone who breaks this rule! I have security cameras in each room and hall, so don't think I won't know if you're screwing around outside when you should be asleep." he stated. "That's rule number one. As for rule number two... oh, right, speaking of surveillance cameras, don't you dare go messing with them. If one breaks? Again, punishment. It's a simple rule. Also, you're not allowed to break down doors that aren't locked manually. Other than that, all areas are free for you to use and explore! Nothing's prohibited in that regard, so we skip over that..." he said.
"Oh, and didn't some of you say that you wanted to leave? You can... but, it's a one-way exit and it's not without a couple of... complications. Want to hear my third rule?"

“Owie…” Tears form in Sakura’s eyes as she slowly sits up, rubbing the back of her head. She hit it pretty hard on the ballroom floor during that sudden lapse of consciousness that she guesses everyone else experienced as well, considering their various positions on the floor. What the heck? “Was it a sound or something…?” she mutters to herself. Sakura’s read about sounds being high pitched enough to cause people to faint- but, she didn’t think people would actually do stuff like that.
A high-pitched voice interrupts her thoughts about how everyone was knocked unconscious. It’s a voice that sounds like a caricature- the kind of voice you’d use when mocking someone or copying them. Her eyes settle on the bear that seems to have replaced AI. Somehow, even though part of her is scared of the bear- Monokuma, the bear calls itself-, she can’t help but think it’s also cute, in a weird kind of way. Although, its voice is starting to grate on her nerves.
Looking to her side, Sakura spots a slightly-disoriented looking Junichi. Is he okay? Maybe I should ask…
Sakura looks over to find Minako looking distressed with her cellphone in hand. Micchan, don’t worry, it’s going to be okay… Sakura feels the urge to hug the painter; she doesn’t want the girl to be scared.
Sakura nods, flashing them what she hopes is an encouraging smile. “Definitely! Don’t worry, Micchan, Junichi-kun! It’s just a prank!”
Then, after Junichi’s question, Monokuma launches into his rulebook spiel. An increasingly worried feeling is building up in her stomach as he reaches the end.
Nope, no thank you, Mr. Crazy Bear, I am a-okay! I am fine without hearing anymore of your craziness. “Okay, what’s the third rule? Also, would you kindly tell me who I should beat up for pulling this prank? Thanks!” Sakura puts on her fiercest, no-nonsense, big sister expression, although there's a tremor in her voice that betrays how scared she is. Something about her two new friends reminds her of her little brother; she’s not sure what- maybe it's Junichi's playfulness, maybe it's Minako's excitement-, but she knows that she is officially in big sister mode and she is not the type of big sister who lets their younger siblings get hurt. And Monokuma is giving off a dangerous vibe. Don't worry, Junichi-kun, Micchan! I'll definitely take care of you guys!

(OOC: I got the permission to post before Mai. I'm sorry, Lexi!)The announcement to gather at the ballroom came at just the right time - Haruka was looking for someone to carry out the red-headed harlot's punishment, and wherever that fake A.I. was, the headmaster and the junior advisor were sure to be. One of them would listen to this woman's grievous offences and lead her off the premises, like they should. Haruka dragged the unwilling perpetrator by the arm through the hallways of the mansion before arriving at the Ballroom. When they reached the Ballroom, Haruka instructed the young woman to stay close, but the fake A.I. came on before she could scout out authority. She sighed and listened to the 'hologram' rattle off meaningless words, rolled her eyes when it seemed to call out Haruka specifically, and waited for this damned seminar to be over before the offender went and threw herself on another unsuspecting male. Then all hell broke loose. The lights gave out. "They're just getting ready for the presentation, aren't they?" Haruka thought to herself, blissfully unaware of what was going on behind the scenes. Then, she heard the workers yell, trying to fix something, things not going right. "This isn't supposed to happen." Her eyes darted around the room, watching everyone panic, scream, lose control. "This isn't happening. They're going to fix it, this is going to turn out okay. It has to!" Haruka's heart was pounding, her sweat beading, hands figiting - she could feel her normally ordered mind slip and fall into chaos, being replaced with anxiety, fear, worry, horrible thoughts of what was to come. For the few seconds before she finally passed out, Haruka was completely and utterly afraid.
Haruka regained consciousness a little bit after everyone else, her ears being filled with the sound of panicking schoolchildren, her eyes awakening to a darkened Ballroom that just didn't seem right. She unsteadily rose to her feet, still trembling a little bit from her brief moment of panic, and the first thing she saw was... A stuffed animal. Galavanting around. Like it was alive. It looked like nothing she'd ever seen before, a demented caricature of a child's plaything. She tried to listen closely to whatever it was saying in it's ridiculous voice, her anger slowly and exponentially increasing by the second. "First strike." Haruka crossed her arms and furrowed her brow in slight annoyance. "You do not speak to me - to any of us - that way." She brooded to herself. "Was that an attempt at humor? He - it - is joking. This is a prank. A horrible one." She was starting to bare her teeth and she could feel her body growing hot, blood pumping through every vein. Haruka balled her fists, her right eyelid involuntarily twitching. "This is growing inane - no, impossible. It's lying. Did someone drink to much when thinking of fun activities for us? I swear to God, if this goes on for one second longer..."When the bear - is that what it was? Whenever the thing pulled out it's "rulebook" and started reading off it's unreasonable set of "rules", Haruka grunted in pure, unfiltered anger. She pounded her way from the middle of the Ballroom up to the podium where the abomination was standing, not caring about whatever this thing had in store, not caring about any sort of "punishment", not caring about any retaliation, and with one swift, smooth motion, she grabbed the thing - about the size of a toddler or a small child - and pulled it by it's ear. The "fur" it was covered with was soft, thin, and she could feel the hard material the monster was really made of. It was a robot. Haruka didn't care about "advancements in A.I. technology" now - she just yanked the thing off the podium, slamming it against the tiled floor, and listened to it as it made a satisfying THUNK against it. "JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU PIECE OF SHIT!" Haruka picked up her foot, positioned it against the creature's face, and stomped. Hard. And again. And again. And again. She listened to the sound of metal crunching against her leather shoe, electrical circuits getting crushed under her weight, it's red, glass eye getting cracked and splintered - and it just kept smiling, which filled Haruka with even more unbridled rage. "STOP TALKING OR I'LL TEAR OFF YOUR FUCKING ARMS AND LET YOU BLEED TO DEATH!"

"Continuing, I should also make sure to mention that--" And, that shut the bear up. The robotic interior immediately went completely limp as Haruka stomped it into the round, again and again. It was being destroyed quickly by Haruka's brown shoes, but underneath the red eye, a warning light began to blink.
BLEEP... BLEEP... BLEEP... BLEEP...
The sound of a rhythmic little siren could be heard, one that quickly began to increase in tempo as Haruka continued to stomp. While it was being dismantled, the sound also continued to increase in volume as Haruka's heel dug further into the metallic endoskeleton, revealing an even freakier, puppet-like figure within the teddy bear.
A second bear, identical to the first, hopped up onto the podium, continuing nonchalantly.
"Rude, I am not a toy! As I was saying, violence is prohibited against your host here. I have over one quadrillion backup bodies, so it doesn't matter much in the long run... yet, still, you had to see me in such a sorry state! Naked, hairless! Now, to finish... attempted destruction of me or any variation of me thereof is punishable by death." he finished. "Since you didn't know that rule yet at the time of your actions, I let you off easy with the internal self-destruct setting, so prepare for the slap-on-the-wrist punishment of third-degree burns in ten... nine... eight... seven..."
He droned on, leaving the identical clone to do its bidding.
"Anyone else care to take me on, hmm?"

"Anyone else care to take me on, hmm?" Haruka froze. In her fury, she didn't even realize that she had broken her heel bone, the pain from it being killed by the rage and adrenaline. She didn't notice the light, which was broken as soon as it turned on. The only time she came to her senses was when the bear started talking and mentioned injuries and explosions. To her. Because of her losing her control. In a brief moment of lucidity from her anger, she quickly picked up the robot, puppet, animatronic, whatever it was by the arm, bringing it up above her head, and throwing it as hard as she could towards the wall. The bear exploded in mid-flight, a fantastically bright and vibrant explosion that scattered wires, circuits, metal rivets, and tufts of fur across the Ballroom, and everything came crashing down on her - her heel's pain, her losing her temper in the worst way, her foul language, everything that's happened today, mechanical parts falling at her feet, reminding her of what she just did in front of 22 people that counted on her - she just collapsed, barely breaking her fall with her arms, and lied there for the remainder of the meeting, staring at the ceiling, only barely listening to whatever it was else that the bear had to say.
