{OOC: thank you oleg for this beautiful title}The second Paris walked through the large doors of the library, she knew she was home. She broke out in a wide smile, running beside the shelves and lightly sliding her fingers over every book, every collection of words she could reach. The air smelled of dust, but that smelled like home. A different time, a different place, a different Paris. She giggled as she picked books out at random. The classics. Grimm's Brothers. Moby Dick. The Encyclopedia Volume 7. The Encyclopedia Volume 7! It was almost too much for her to handle. She was almost too afraid to actually take one, lest she dirty it. "This is the best thing I've ever seen!" she laughed, and it was true. The library back home, while she loved it, was horribly underfunded. Many books were falling to pieces, and this room was pristine. She felt as if she had stepped back in time. She plopped into a red chair, flipping up her red hood and immediately opening one of her favorite books, Grimm's Brothers. She stared idly at the pages, flipping every so often and trying to calm the tornado of excitement in her heart. Books were her saving grace once more, and she knew she'd be spending a lot of time here.

Mai been heading full speed to the sports rooms in the basement, when she realised that she had forgotten her fencing things on the desk, the teen had had to double back. Now, she was on her second trip, and passing a set of double doors when an ecstatic voice had made its way through the doors and stopped her in her tracks.
Mai turned and hovered in front of the door for a second, unsure. She hadn't been thinking too much of the other students during her introduction, but now that that was out of the way, it wasn't like she didn't want to meet them. Part of her nagged that it was just to make completely sure that they weren't suspicious of her, didn't associate her with her brother, but that voice was old and crusty and she was used to pushing it down, and that was what she did as she stepped through the library doors.
Immediately she was surrounded by books. The sheer size of it- the sheer cleanliness of it, it was all almost overwhelming. Mai had never been a book person, but if she was this would probably be heaven. It looked like someone's heaven, at least. The girl- girl? she was guessing girl, at least- from before was in the room, plopped in a chair, looking for all the world like someone who'd just found the meaning of life. Is this the same girl as before? She was struck by it, the difference between this and the shy girl who'd introduced herself as the Ultimate Librarian. "Paris Eins?" The words come out of Mai's mouth without even thinking.

As the words left Mai's mouth, Paris squeaked and dropped her book, leaning back in her chair and nearly toppling into the fireplace behind her.
“A-ah...you're...Mai. Mai Nishioka. H-hello,” she took a deep breath, steadied herself, and smiled, unafraid. “Welcome to the library! Isn't it fantastic?” She stood up shakily, but she was already revving herself up mentally. “The books here...they're old, but you know what they say...well maybe you dont, but they're called the classics for a reason. That was back when writer's had a clue what things REALLY meant in literature. Rain's never just rain, treasure is never just gold and jewels, a princess isn't just a pretty girl...everything meant something important. Something underneath the surface. Life's a bit like that, isn't it?”
She covered her mouth, blushing. “I'm sorry...I didn't m-mean to rant. It's just...hehe! It's like a wonderland! You're a fencer though, right? You probably don't know or care much about these books... but you should s-stick around. Maybe. I promise I won't rant about princesses anymore.” She paused for a moment, and slowly, she moved to hand the book she was reading to Mai. “You might like this. I've read it a hundred times, so maybe it's not mine to borrow.”

"Ah!" Mai felt herself moving forward, without thinking she moved forward, but just as she did, Paris righted herself. That had been a scare. Adrenaline coursing through her, she found herself relaxing into the pleasant high. Such an organised, neat environment- it was packed with books, but the neat rows of shelves being so ordered almost reminded her of the simplicity of a training room. It was serene, and it seemed like this girl thought so t-
"Welcome to the library!"
Mai nearly jumped out of her feet. If all her attention wasn't on Paris before, it was now. Wide-eyed, Mai could only watch as the girl started talking about books, launching into an impassioned speech about literature and classics and- she was having trouble keeping up. When she stopped on the note: "Life's a bit like that, isn't it?” Mai was almost surprised. She stood still, for just a second, as Paris handed her the book, with her eyebrows inches above where they normally were. Then, slowly, she relaxed, sinking into a smile. She'd been worried for nothing, really. Nothing. Someone so honest couldn't possibly be bad, and it was nice for someone to be so... forthright? Mai didn't know what is was, but she was starting to feel better already. "I don't mind if you rant about princesses. I don't read about them often. They don't usually carry rapiers." She took the book from Paris and opened it to the first page. The ones on her face weren't her reading glasses, so she had to squint to make out some of the words. "Are these fairy tales? Like the ones read to kids?" She realised that probably sounded, well, judgmental- but she really didn't have much point of reference. The last time she had seen a proper fairy tale, the bogeyman was still a valid concern, and curling up with Mom and Dad was not out of the question. But the book didn’t look fairy tale-ish in the least. Even the title- Grimm.

Paris followed the Fencer's gaze, sharing the moment of appreciating the scenery. “Aha, I suppose they don't. If a princess carried one, though, the stories would be much simpler. But then where would the symbols go? Would the prince and princess work in tandem, like two gears in clockwork? Or would the prince get upset and throw a fit, and have the roles reversed where he needs rescuing? Sorry, heh...Did it again.” “Are these fairy tales? Like the ones read to kids?”
Paris sighed then, moving a bit closer hesitantly. “They were, in the past. Now people like to fluff things up, so the wolf can just be stopped by a little girl with a talking monkey, or something. My mom never let me watch TV, but I think that was a show once! If you, um, don't want it...I'll put it back.” She looked to the side, dejected. “ I like fairy tales and myths. They were...different.” She thought about saying more, but shook her head. I barely know this girl, she thought to herself. I'm not gonna go telling her everything.“Especially the Grimm ones. They didn't always end happily, but they showed what life can really be like. Ups, downs, and one hell of a fight. But enough about me. Tell me about you...if you want!” She laughed nervously, glad to be taking the spotlight off herself. Her mind was racing. I overstepped. She knows too much, so I should make it even.{ Mai Nishioka ! Hope this works but I'm untalented with forum magic aha}

Something wistful was in her voice. Mai wished she could relate. She'd never had much time for fairy tale worlds, but Paris seemed exactly the opposite- the closest exceptions were, well, niconico videos and air hockey, but those weren't exactly deep hobbies, and the latter was a source of shame, anyhow. Beating kids five years younger than her at arcade games didn't exactly fill her with pride. She started talking about the Grimm book just as she closed it shut. Up, downs, fights? In a fairy tail? Mai peered at the book's cover, one more time, then tucked it under her arm- maybe she'd give it a read. It wasn't like the library was short on books. "Tell me about you...if you want!”She felt the muscles in her body tense, just then, against her will. Mai guessed she had been grilling her a lot, hadn't she? Her eyes drifted to the book, suddenly noticing a crease in the page that hadn't been there before. "I don't think there's much to say about me," She said, smiling and smoothing out the pages of the book. What was safe to talk about? She thought for a second, then settled on talents. "There aren't any stories in fencing. I just want-" she felt pressure, now- Paris had told her all about her passions, and her motivations- but how far did she want to delve? "- to get better. Move forward. That's what Hope Peak is about, right? That's... pretty much why I came on this trip. There's nothing really like this in Kumamoto." She stopped when the page started to split from its crease. "I'm guessing there aren't many libraries like this lying around, either?"

Paris smiled slightly at the book now tucked away safely, before looking at Mai. She also noticed how tense she became after being questioned, and her eyes narrowed. Maybe Mai wasn't who Paris thought she was, either. The awkward pauses and fumbles in Mai's speech tipped her off, and it left much to the imagination. Just what did she have to hide? As Mai continued and spoke about Kumamoto, she relaxed slightly again. They didn't have entirely different intentions, did they? Paris and Mai had both come to further their career. Maybe Mai didn't want to talk about whatever past she had. It wasn't Paris' privilege to pry, but she made a mental note to keep her at arms' length for now.
"I'm guessing there aren't many libraries like this lying around, either?"
"No, I suppose not. The one back home was sad compared to this, but...it was still beautiful." she admitted, sighing wistfully. Her eyes caught the torn page, and she looked up suddenly. "If you can't take care of them, you shouldn't take them at all...they have feelings, you know? But...you're uncultured to literature, I guess. So it's forgiven! Just try to take better care of it, okay?" She smiled, but it was hard to hide her irritation. Suddenly, she felt emboldened. "I'll make a deal with you. Tell me something a little deeper and I'll forgive you for messing up the page." She could learn about Kumomoto, her past, maybe even a dark secret...the possibilities were endless.

She hadn't even been thinking about the torn page when Paris replied. Books, feelings. She supposed she should have been more careful around the Ultimate Librarian- if anyone would care about the well-being of books, it would be her; and if someone were to damage one of her fencing swords in any way, Mai might have a mini-aneurysm. She nodded and closed the book. Then came the uncultured to literature comment, and Mai felt her cheeks heat up. Excuse me? "Tell me something a little deeper and I'll forgive you for messing up the page."Mai swore her blood pressure went up, right there and then. A fan trying to pry information from her was nothing new, but the ultimate librarian didn't look or sound like someone even remotely interested in fencing, and if she even knew who she was prior, she was good at hiding it. Mai had no reason to think that the sudden insistence on knowing something deeper about her was for anything but ammunition. To settle the score. Fine."I'm not who I said I was, when I applied here." She started, darting her eyes to the chair behind Paris. "I'm actually a different person entirely." She paused. "Ever heard of Kamen Rider?" She turned her eyes back to the brunette, hoping the message had gotten across. The morning, the tension. She was feeling exasperated, now, past the point of caring. Crossing her arms, she continued. " My 'dirty little secrets' are probably plastered all over the internet. Please, feel free to google it... Why do you want to know about me, anyway?" Paris Eins man this thread title isn't nearly as descriptive as it was before :'D

As the Fencer began to blush, so did Paris. Perhaps she'd gone too far, hurt the girl, ruined their chance of being friends...but as Mai continued, she couldn't help but pick up on how rigid and rushed her speech was. 'Not who she said she was'? She couldn't tell if she was throwing red herrings into the sea, but either way, she was going to reel it up. The 'Kamen' rider did interest her, she had to admit. How could she have applied as a different person than who she was? "So... Mai isn't your real name?" she asked, hesitant but curious. "I find it hard to believe you could've slipped past Hope's Peak pretending to be of another identity. Who is this...Common Rider, you spoke of? No, Kamen. But perhaps they were common. An archetype, if you will. Perhaps you're...hm, never mind," she said, but then continued. "I see you're...nervous." Paris' mind began to race anxiously, but blood rushed through her head and she, for once, felt like she had the upper hand. "So defensive, ready to strike over a simple request... There's a lot of story within you, isn't there? And...look, I...I'm sorry about the uncultured comment." That, she had to admit. She didn't mean for it to come off so mean, so brazen. "Perhaps I fell into the dangers of stereotyping. I don't..." She began to deflate, suddenly worried. " I don't mean to make an enemy out of you. I'm just...curious. But...I cannot ask more of you." Good. Better to end it before she had to reveal anything else about herself. "Mai...Nishioka. I'm sorry." The tension was still thick as could be, enough for Mai to cut through, probably. Paris busied herself looking around at the remaining shelves, the books she hadn't met yet. There was a vast amount, but the magic had left the room. Now there was only two people arguing over things left unsaid, and a currently unanswered apology. {OOC: Sorry if this is short! I wrote and posted this entire thing on my phone. :'D Paging Mai Nishioka for a tense time?}

Silence was an under-appreciated virtue amongst most city-dwellers. Take any one of them and throw them in a less than desirable neighborhood, she's willing to bet that they'll make enough noise to attract every ill-mannered thug and thief around the block. Back from where she's from, silent footsteps and nimble fingers were a necessity for people like her. After all, those with little brawn often find that their best strategy is to simply avoid confrontations. And while being lightfooted wasn't exactly anymore a necessity, it already became her second nature. It was akin to breathing or blinking - a simple, thoughtless act. Though unlike breathing or blinking, sneaking up on others isn't exactly something that people are fond of. This habit of hers had startled more people than the sum total of digits on her hands and feet combined. Arriving in front of the library's doors, she opened them and slipped through with barely a creak. As quickly as she entered, the thick atmosphere in the room made her force of habit kick in. Darting behind one of the surrounding shelves, her eyebrows raised at the sight of two other occupants. A glimpse of their scowled faces left little to imagination, though Angie wandered about the root cause of it all. The two of them, they were the fencer and librarian weren't they? Weren't fencers from dignified positions in society? Someone who could take the title of Ultimate didn't seem like the type to scorn literature, meaning that their currently less than pleasant demeanor probably stemmed from something else.
It was at about this point when Angie came to a disturbing realization that hiding behind bookshelves and spying on her peers wasn't exactly something taken from the pages of 'How to introduce yourself for dummies'. The fact that this was her go-to reaction made her feel some uncomfortable amounts of embarrassment, but were these really people she would want to associate herself with? Surely there are other better choices? With a mere bookshelf between herself and the other two girls, Angie stood with a heavy heart.
I.. I guess I could try to talk to them. It's only fair that I give them a chance.

Immediately after leaving the initiation repast, David headed to the library. One of the places to better the mind, David saw the library as a place for both exploration and reflection. Of course, information was also available on the Internet, and could easily be accessed by the iPad he always had in the backpack slung over his shoulder, but he found that learning from a hard copy always was more effective.
Having found a book titled A Textbook of Modern Toxicology by E. Hodgson, he headed back to the nearest table, only to find two girls facing off against each other. Coincidentally, he walked past a girl all in white, closely hugging a bookshelf, on the opposite site. Apparently, she was listening in on the conversation. Moving past them, he seated himself and flipped open the book. Then realising that the scowls and eavesdropping meant trouble, he looked up.
"Please try not to make too much noise. This is a library, after all."
Recognition shot through his mind, as he realised that one of the two girls was Paris Eins, the librarian.
"You're the SHSL Librarian, right? You should know what I'm talking about. Oh, and you're attracting too much attention. There's a girl eavesdropping on you."
He shrugged and returned to his reading.

She frowned. She guessed Paris hadn't gotten the sarcasm. The line she'd thrown out had gotten picked up with surprising vigour, and now the fencer was starting to regret saying it at all. Mai leaned back, letting her head cool down though every nerve in her body was trying to tell her otherwise. Paris seemed to be interested in the Kamen Rider thing. It was weird; 'a lot of story' wasn’t the first way she would have put it, just a car non-accident and an eclipsed career, but it was strangely liberating to hear someone calling her 'interesting' without knowing about the it, and her defensiveness was starting feel wrong, like a badly-fitted outfit; something she should shrug off. She sighed, quieted, and leaned back against the desk. The librarian- Ultimate librarian, was unassuming. She was wearing a hoodie, for christ's sake, but she was pencil sharp. It didn't have anything to do with books, but Mai was starting to see why she might have been called an 'Ultimate'. She turned to face her straight on, thinking of what to say. The situation was awkward, but she could make into a slightly-less-awkward truce if she played her cards right. "Not an archetype, a kid's superhero show I used to watch with my brother." Mai said, and frankly. She felt like she owed the favour of something more personal. "Before he became a hit and run legend. Perpetrator, not victim." She felt the need to clarify. Just then, the sound of footsteps coming into the room made her clamp her mouth shut. Another person's entrance marked the end of that line of conversation, and Mai turned around to see David… Bennett, was it? He was another one of the newcomers, and a foreigner, and had introduced himself as the Ultimate Toxicologist. "Please try not to make too much noise. This is a library, after all.""Of course." They hadn't been making too much noise in the first place, but it was no time to start another argument. Mai moved the book under her arm to read later, and shrugged back to Paris, when the toxicologist continued. "...There's a girl eavesdropping on you."
What? How he managed to save that for last, Mai didn't know. She stood for a second, still, then swivelled to see behind the bookshelf. White hair, short stature, unmistakably foreign- she recognised the Ultimate quickly- she was a late-comer and, apparently, a bit of a snoop. Mai felt her face heat up all anew. " Hello." She said, miraculously not accusatory. It couldn't be helped after all, that the library was a public place, and people could do what they wanted and- "I hope we weren't distracting you from..." Ok, that was maybe slightly less so. Still, as strange as hiding behind a bookshelf was, she might have had some reason for it. She hoped she did.

"Would you believe me if I said I was just about to introduce myself?” If that David fellow hadn't called her out like that, she would have been able to make a much better impression. The only saving grace is that he seemed to be worse off at making friends than she is. However minuscule the benefit was, hopefully that would put her in a better light. Walking towards Mai, Angie gauged her reaction carefully. The other girl didn't exactly have a friendly tone in her voice, so Angie carried on with a deadpan look. “I'm your local neighborhood doctor, Angie. Just don't sue me for not having a license.” It was a crude attempt at a bitter joke, and a chuckle was even let out towards the end. What was wrong with her, acting like this? She hadn't come to a peace talk to make enemies, so what explained her shitty attitude? “I'm.. I'm sorry. That was uncalled for.” Extending her right hand for a handshake, Angie smiled apprehensively. This gesture wasn't one that she was comfortable with, and how the other girl would react worried her. Would she shake a hand that had been in contact with more blood and pus than computer keyboards and smartphones? How would she react to the faint scar on her wrist, that somber reminder etched into her skin of the handcuffs that started this whole mess? These thoughts loomed in her mind, quickly forming a thick haze of cowardliness and insecurity. Her smile was wavering now, threatening to break at any moment. Thinking about the other girl, the librarian, just made everything worse. Now there was a pit in her gut, threatening to swallow her whole. How would she feel about bloodstained hands flipping through the pages of her delicate books? With her hand still extended, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Calm down, she told herself. As weird as she might look doing so, it was an act done out of necessity. There wasn't an option as she sought comfort in the darkness. Instead of the invasive white which so many found peaceful, she found that black is where nothing can get to you. White light shines through, exposing all the secrets and scars buried deep inside. The shade of black lets you keep those horrid things buried underground, not judging you for your sins. You're free to be with only yourself, in peace, surrounded by the comfortable shade of nothingness. In the dark, you can find solace and safety. Out in the white, cruel judging eyes examine your exposed soul. Taking another deep breath and breathing it out, Angie opened her eyes. It felt far longer than it actually was, but it was surely lengthy enough that the fencer would have noticed the peculiarity. Whether the recipient of her handshake would ask about it remains yet to be seen, but the important thing was that her composure had been regained. “ I'm Angie, it's a pleasure to meet you.” she said, lips curling upwards into a small smile. Thinking it wise to acknowledge the other girl as well, she continued just loud enough for her to hear but not beyond what's acceptable in a library. “ It's a pleasure to meet you too, librarian.”

Paris moved forward, standing close next to Mai. Okay, maybe things weren't completely okay yet. But she had to admit, she felt a bit safer near someone she knew rather than these strangers. Er...former strangers. Friends, as of now. She looked up at Mai, smiling nervously. Maybe things were okay now. She wanted to say something about her brother, but now probably wasn't the best time. Rather, privacy might be better for that discussion. Or perhaps it should never happen. She derailed that train of thought, and moved on.
She took a deep breath, calmed her nerves, and looked at the others.
“Nice to meet you both...Yes, I'm Paris Eins. This is Mai...um, Nishioka. I'm sorry if we were being too loud, David. I forgot my manners.” She blushed lightly at this. It was true, bad form for the Ultimate Librarian to break etiquette. At the eavesdropping comment, she was surprisingly unfazed. She would never tell Mai this, but she had an idea that someone was behind the shelf earlier. Extensive time in a library made you keen to seeing through the books, if you will. It just felt wrong to interrupt. Now, though, she had reverted back to her usual self. Boldness was gone, her library now filled with students. Not that it was Paris' in the first place.
To her relief, everyone was visibly nervous. Except David, but he seemed like a different case altogether. She made a mental note to be careful around him. “So, um, Angie...well, it's a pleasure to...meet you as well. You're an...unlicensed doctor? That seems rather...well, dangerous.” She vaguely remembered her parents talking about a case like this, and she frowned. Was this the girl who had saved a few people on the street? She didn't seem like much of an Ultimate, but...perhaps she was wrong. There was definitely talent in saving lives through luck, or however she managed to accomplish that feat.
